FAQs
Common questions about our Coffee
What is Estate Coffee?
Coffee that’s directly from one estate. Single origin, when you know the origin belongs to us and not some 3rd party.
Is Hunkal the name of the Estate?
No. Thogarihunkal is the name of our estate. Hunkal is our brand for our range of Estate Coffees.
Who is Thogarihunkal?
That’s our great grandfather’s grandfather, Malle Gowda. In 1857, he with the help of a few British discovered how coffee can be grown in Chikkamagaluru. He developed the estate and named it after the family name, Thogarihunkal.
What really is Estate Coffee? How is it different from Single Origin coffee?
Great question. All coffee goes through a 10-step process from bean to brew. Often the entire 10 steps are not managed by one; The growers don’t get into roasting and distributing and the roasters don’t get into plantation and farming. Only those who are truly stubborn about the quality and freshness of coffee at every stage, undertake it end-to-end. Fellow coffee-lovers get access to rare coffee that’s passionately grown, processed and distributed, with no compromise on its quality. That’s rare Estate Coffee.
All Estate coffee is single origin. But all single origin coffee is not necessarily Estate coffee, as it is sourced by roasters directly from estates, and then take over the roasting and marketed of them.
Why should I buy from you?
We know our coffee. The bean is in our gene. We have a seven generation legacy. We are not just an Estate coffee brand, we also drink the coffee we sell in our home. four times a day we brew our own filter coffee and drink it together. The true test of a good coffee is if you go, ‘Ah! That was satisfying.’ Every single time. We want all coffee lovers to enjoy that experience. We always encourage coffee lovers to try our coffee once.
So, are the other filter coffees are not good?
They are. If people like them, they certainly must be good. All we are saying is that Estate Coffee is superior in quality as you can be sure of its tracebility, process, freshness and most importantly the passion for coffee by its makers that’s packed and sealed for you.
I understand coffee has to be consistent. But my coffee always tastes the same every day already.
That’s great. If you like what you’re drinking, don’t change anything. A coffee has to start your day without any inconsistencies. No coffee is better than the other. It’s either purer, fresher, clean, more ethically grown or more consistent in its notes. We at Hunkal Estate Coffee, can assure you all of these.
What’s the big deal about Chikmaglur coffee?
It’s the holy grail of coffee. The triangulation of weather, soil and the original coffee beans from 1857.
Are there more Estate Coffee brands?
We truly hope so. The world deserves fresh, good quality coffee. Every day.
So are you more expensive?
Right now we are not. Maybe a shade more. We think that’s not so expensive when you’re getting the benefit of origin, cleanliness, freshness, expertise, passion and so much more. Most of our regular customers still express surprise over our affordability for our quality.
Why should I drink Hunkal Coffee?
Because the world is chaotic and when we take a break, to catch our breath for just those few minutes, pause, sip some coffee and get back into the chaos, that coffee has to really be worth it.
Also, because it’s single origin, bean to cup, less than 15-day old batched, ethically grown coffee. Or just ‘Estate Coffee’.
